This summer at Hollins I am taking Picture Book Design with Elizabeth Dulemba. We are each working on creating an entire Picture Book Dummy of a story she provided us with - well, we got to choose one of three options, but four out of six of us chose the same story. The story's about a giant who is lonely (and tired of playing checkers by himself) and so decides to walk into town to find someone to play with.
On the left is the beginnings of my design for my giant. I'm trying to make sure I know what he looks like from all angles and to make sure I will draw him consistently. He kind of looks like a gardening grandpa, and I like that. A couple other classmates are also illustrating the same story and it's great fun to see their giants.
In the middle is the start to my storyboard. It still needs LOTS of work, but I have a couple of spreads that I'm pretty happy with. I just need to keep doing thumbnails and and coming up with better and better ideas.
On the right is a picture of my somewhat organized desk. My storyboard in this photo is a little further along and I've started finalizing a couple of my ideas in slightly bigger drawings. More to come!
